About Us

I got the chance to study at the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, where I continue to focus on professional art design. Due to economic challenges, I chose to specialize in design art. I started creating paintings and sculptures using various media and even got invited to work on art projects in hotels…

HandCrafted Elephant Dung
I shared with my dear friends my love and respect for elephants, as well as how I acquired the ability and strength to establish an institution called ETH PAURA. The cornerstone of my handcrafted creations is elephant dung. I must emphasize how I recycled elephant dung to produce eco-friendly products. I learned about paper made from elephant dung, with the first paper originating in Kenya from African elephant dung and subsequently spreading to various countries. In Sri Lanka, these products are crafted at a high standard, yielding beautifully designed books and stationery.

My aspiration was to use elephant dung as a medium to sculpt elephant statues. Despite facing challenges during my research, my perseverance led me to a breakthrough. One rainy day, upon returning from the perahara season at Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the tooth Relic ) in Kandy, I noticed a significant amount of elephant dung transformed by nature. This observation sparked my creative thoughts.

Wild elephants consume a 100% plant-based diet, foraging for leaves, twigs, and grass in forests, while domesticated elephants are fed vegetarian fare, including coconut fronds, jackfruit leaves, cloves, and rough plant parts. Consequently, the dung from domesticated elephants is thicker, resulting in more visible fibers when examined. Through extensive research, I discovered that well-washed and dried elephant dung could be used in designs, providing the basic ingredients for creating pulp.

After many years of effort, I developed a process to create high-quality pulp by combining pure elephant dung with special glue and ayurvedic oils and herbs. This allowed me to produce elephant replicas, which garnered patent licenses and registrations in Sri Lanka.

These replicas, made from locally sourced ingredients, are suitable for various settings, such as homes, offices, or religious spaces. It's essential to keep them in internal environments and away from moisture to ensure longevity.

Our ETH PAURA offers a range of products, including pen holders, pencil holders crafted as elephant legs, wall frames, and custom-designed replicas. These designs, crafted without moulds and by my own hand, can accommodate different sizes and postures. Additionally, we create replicas of elephants adorned in vibrant colours, reminiscent of those seen during sacred Perahara festivals.

Placing these replicas in homes or workplaces is believed to bring good fortune, a tradition dating back to ancient times in Asian countries like India and Sri Lanka. Elephants hold a special significance in these cultures, symbolizing luck and success. Their majestic presence and vibrant colors make them among the most captivating creatures on land.
